BISMARCK, ND — The University of Mary Concert Band will present its spring performance on Sunday, March 18 at 3 p.m. on the University Campus.

“We’re pleased to present the first-ever acoustic large-ensemble performance in Founder’s Hall, located in our brand-new Lumen Vitae University Center,” said conductor Dennis Gowen, professor of music at the University of Mary. “It’s a pleasure to perform our spring concert there, and what a treat we have in store for our music friends who attend the performance!”

The concert will open with a nod to the centenary of American composer Leonard Bernstein as the ensemble performs Overture to “Candide.”

I’m perhaps most excited about our second work on the program – Lincolnshire Posy by Percy Grainger,” added Gowen. “Grainger loved recording English folk singers on the ethnographic wax cylinder about a century ago, and this monumental work—a “top 10” among all wind conductors worldwide, highlights six of the singers and the stories and songs he recorded.”

The ensemble will also perform the classic work Pageant by Vincent Persichetti, and Second Prelude (originally for piano) by George Gershwin. Another major featured work on the program is Danzón No.2 by Arturo Márquez. Danzón No. 2 is among the top three most frequently performed Mexican contemporary orchestral classical music compositions.

“The students are ready to lay down some serious Latin strains with this work,” said Gowen.

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact professor Dennis Gowen at (701) 355-8068 or dcgowen@umary.edu.
