BISMARCK, ND — One of the school’s and community’s most cherished annual events, Christmas at Mary, will soon reverberate the stone walls of Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel on campus. This historic and iconic Marcel Breuer-design chapel opened in 1959, and has been the home for this concert ever since its founding, pleasing generations upon generations of music lovers.

“Christmas at Mary is a long-standing tradition at the University of Mary that allows the students and faculty in the Department of Music to share a concert of beautiful Christmas music in the stunning Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel,” said Dr. Tom Porter, professor of music and chair of the Department of Music at Mary.  “The audience will enjoy holiday favorites, such as “Silent Night” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” and hear musical masterworks from the Renaissance to the present, including music by Giovanni Gabrieli, Arvo Part and John Tavener.”

Conductors for the event include Porter, Concert Choir and Vocal Jazz; Rebecca Raber, Women’s Choir; Dennis Gowen, Gabrieli Brass; Tonya Mertz, Double Reed Ensemble; Dr. Brian Lydeen, Saxophone Ensemble; and Dr. Everaldo Martinez, String Ensemble. Dr. Youna Hartgraves, assistant professor of voice, will be a featured soprano soloist on the well-known carol, “O Holy Night.” Acclaimed for her electrifying and passionate performances, soprano Youna Jang Hartgraves has sung leading operatic roles throughout the United States, and has participated in young artist programs at Opera Saratoga, and The Academy of Vocal Arts.

Overflow seating will be available in the chapel foyer. People are encouraged to arrive early in order to ensure seating in Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel. The Music Student Organization will be collecting non-perishable food items at the doors and donating them to Ministry on the Margins. Ministry on the Margins is a local food bank founded by Sister Kathleen Atkinson, a member of Annunciation Monastery, the founders and sponsors of the University of Mary.

The Concert Choir, featuring over 90 students, includes students from 20 states and nearly every major on campus.
