MANDAN, ND – Any expectations for the first University of Mary hockey game in school history was exceeded before the puck even dropped for the first time. With fans lining up outside the Schwan Cadillac Area at the Starion Sports Complex long before the doors even opened, capacity was reached before the Marauders were introduced to their fans for the first time.
Once the game commenced before the sold-out crowd, the Marauders put on a show on both ends of the ice, defeating the visiting North Dakota State University Bison club hockey team 8-0 in American Collegiate Hockey Association action.
Defenseman Andrew Heckeman scored the first goal in school history just 3:44 into the contest, blasting a shot home from above the circle on a power play. Josh Colleaux and Phillip Silveria provised the assists on the historic goal and UMary entered the first intermission leading 1-0.
The Marauders broke the game wide open with a flurry of goals early in the second period, scoring four times in just 3:10. Alex Flicek scored first at 16:22 of the second, with Bryce Eckmanm Drew Lenertz and Marshall Tschida following with goals of their own.
Flicek, Kyler Moore and Colleaux finished the scoring for UMary in the third.
Steallar in net, Aaron Nelson backstopped the Marauders to the win. The Bismarck, ND, native stoned the Bison on a pair of breakaways in the third period to secure the victory. He finished with 21 saves.
Seven Marauders scored goals in the game with Flicek the only one to tally twice.
UMary and NDSU conclude a two-game weekend series on Sunday, Sept. 16. Game time is 2 pm.
