“You have been nominated and selected by your peers as having displayed outstanding success in many critical areas of education including, teaching skills, musicianship, leadership and consistent high level of performance by ensembles,” said Jeff Dasovick, NDNBA president, in his letter to Gowen. “Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.”

The Citation of Excellence is awarded to outstanding concert band directors whose ensembles have a history of a distinguished level of accomplishment, or to those individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of bands and band music.

Gowen’s citation states: Through professional leadership you have inspired and motivated excellence in musical performance. Your record of service to our profession is one of which you may be justifiably proud, and will serve as a model for others.

Gowen, a professor of music at Mary, has served his students for nearly 32 years.
